IELTS-Skilled migration and visa language requirements

July 10th, 2013
The Australian Department of Immigration requires that in order to be eligible to apply for one of the permanent General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa categories, namely to enter Australia with an Australian skilled migration visa, you need to be able to speak and understand English to a certain level, based on what is called an IELTS score.
The IELTS score is made up of a combination of tests including speaking, reading, writing, listening and comprehension, of Australian English, (which is more like the English of England rather than the English of America, though in most cases if your English is good enough to know the difference, you need not worry.)
Points gained in the IELTS tests contribute towards your general points (GMS) and are an essential part of the entrance requirement.
The top two scores, Proficient and Competent English, qualify the applicant for the General Skilled Migration visa categories.
A score of Concessional Competent English requires a commitment to further attend classes in English if applying for the Skilled – Regional Sponsored visa.
“Vocational” or “Better than functional” English is the minimum requirement for a skilled trade occupation and the Employer nomination scheme.
Functional English, Limited English and No English do not receive points for English on their GMS points test.
Engineers and teachers have minimum prescribed IELTS scores and must obtain the minimum scores required before being eligible to apply for visa’s to teach or work in their field.
The test is a requirement for all adults wishing to apply for an Australian visa, including children over the age of eighteen and spouses.
